Authentic Citronella plants are known as Cymbopogon winteranus. The word Citronella comes from the base 'citron' which is French for lemon due to it's lemony notes. When Citronella was discovered by the Europeans, it was first rubbed on the body and used as an insect repellant. It was brought to England by the Romans as it was used to treat cuts and swelling. Most of Citronella in the world came from Indonesia, Burma, India and Sri Lanka. Indonesian also use citronella as food enhancers, just like the use of lemongrass in Thai’s food.
