This edible fruit is astringent and slightly sweet. It is made of a dozen of quarters and grows in grapes, hence its name “grapefruit”.

HISTORY:
The grapefruit is believed by botanists to be a happy accident made from the combination of sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) and pomelo (Citrus grandis). It was called a “forbidden fruit” or “smaller shaddock” named after Captain Shaddock of the East India Company who introduced the tree to the West Indies. It is used there as an antiseptic wash for sore throats and skin blemishes.
