Oregano means “joy of the mountains’ in Greek. It is the wild version of Marjoram (origanum marjorana) and has a more ‘thyme’ essence to it due to the high levels of thymol. A very useful oil to have in your kit. Oregano takes 100kg of flowers to make 100ml of essential oil, hence the power.

HISTORY:
Oregano has a scientific name Origanum compactum is an aromatic plant known in Morocco as “Sahtar” or “Zaatar”. The plants have strongly aromatic leaves and are abundant in tubular flowers. Many of these species grow in Morocco and Spain. Ancient Greece would use Oregano as an antiseptic, respiratory ailments and gastrointestinal problems. European cultures would chew on the plant to relieve toothaches, indigestion and rheumatism.
